Does Insurance Cover Alcohol Rehab?
If you are struggling with addiction, finding the right type of treatment can often seem out of reach especially when you look at the cost.
Does Insurance Cover Alcohol Rehab?
Addiction, including alcohol addiction, falls under the category of substance abuse and mental health. As such, Federal Law requires all healthcare insurance providers cover treatment for alcohol rehab.
However, the extent of that coverage differs from one provider to the next.
Premiums vs. Deductibles
As is the case with any type of insurance, there are two main financial categories that apply to your coverage.
- The first is the premium and this is how much you pay on a monthly basis for your insurance coverage
- The second is the deductible, and this is the total amount that you have to pay out of pocket every year before your insurance will kick in and cover the rest
These are inversely related:
- A higher monthly premium means a lower deductible, and a lower monthly premium means a higher deductible
Depending on the insurance provider you have, you might be required to pay your entire deductible before they will cover the cost of alcohol rehab.
This can still save you substantially, especially if you are participating in an inpatient program.
For example:
If your treatment costs for a luxury residential center are $10,000, and your deductible is $6,000, but you’ve already paid $2,000 toward that as part of your other medical expenses over the year, you might be required to pay the remaining $4,000, but then the insurance would cover the remainder.
However, some insurance providers do not require that you pay a percentage instead of the full deductible, something like 20% of all the costs for your treatment, and they cover the other 80%.
So, using that same example, you might be required to pay $2,000 instead, and your insurance would cover the other $8,000.
This is based on your provider and the policy type you have with that provider. Each insurance provider has several levels of care with different names and different types of coverage.
Other Notes
Other notes extend to things beyond your basic services:
- Some insurance providers require a diagnosis from your primary care physician before you are allowed to apply your benefits
- Some insurance providers require that you get treatment from an inpatient facility, someone that is in their network, in order for your benefits to be applied, while others will apply benefits no matter the facility you choose but just to a lesser extent if it is an out of network provider
- Some insurance providers might cover the basic cost of your alcohol rehab and any medication that you need not just for alcohol rehab but for co-occurring mental health disorders might be free of charge or a much lower charge based on your prescription coverage
Again, each provider is different so it’s best that you speak with an insurance specialist to verify the type of coverage you have.
